About Us

  • Independent Association of Western Quebec (IAWQ-AIWQ)

The Independent Association of Western Quebec (IAWQ) represents non-teaching support staff in schools/centres within the Western Quebec School Board.

IAWQ offers advice and assistance to over 300 full-time, part-time, and Chapter 10 personnel. We offer advice with respect to rights under the collective agreements, both provincial and local, workplace health and safety issues, benefits, and working conditions to name a few.

The source of our union pride comes from the continuing hard work of our essential support staff network throughout the 32 schools, centres and administration offices.

  • Support Staff

Whether their work is technical, administrative or manual in nature, support staff in educational institutions have an important role to play, including but not limited to: facilitating independent learning, providing guidance, enabling access to the curriculum, embracing technology (tablets, laptops, chromebooks, etc), nurturing individual pupils such as special needs, promoting inclusion and focusing on a healthy and safe learning environment for all.

  • Support staff in schools has been developing over many years and the role of the support staff has changed over time.

  • In recent decades there has been a move towards the increasing inclusion of pupils with additional and special needs in mainstream schools. This has led to a greater need for additional support in classrooms, a need often satisfied through support staff roles.
